Ģertrūdes ielas teātris, Riga/Latvia

Ģertrūdes ielas teātris (GIT) is an independent production house that stages four to six new productions per season and offers a monthly program of repertoire performances. GIT’s collaboration with artists from the fields of theater, dance, and music is based on a shared belief in the value of creative work—GIT supports and encourages new initiatives and ideas to aid artistic growth. A group of actively engaged partners helps strengthen GIT as a platform for current trends in contemporary theater in Riga.

Mārtiņš Eihe works in state repertoire theaters (Valmiera Drama Theater, Dailes Theater) as well as independent theaters, not only staging productions at Ģertrūdes ielas teātris, but also at various unorthodox locations outside traditional theater spaces, including as part of the International Festival of Contemporary Theater Homo Novus.

His directorial works are characterized by an unflagging interest in people, the world, history, and politics. He utilizes theater as an opportunity for conversation with his creative teams, but also with viewers. Mārtiņš Eihe uses his work to raise uncomfortable and controversial issues. Although he speaks to the audience directly and provokes discussion,  he also remains able to listen accept different opinions, all while avoiding didactics. The main words that encapsulate Mārtiņš Eihe’s theatrical style are openness and creative freedom in terms of both content and form. As a result, the viewer must be prepared that when going to see a play, they might end up at a birthday celebration (Tanya’s Birthday), an escape room (Escape Room. A Myth About Freedom), or an intimate diary reading (The Reading Room).
